Exciting news: I’m moving from tech to travel blog now 🏝.
Just kidding. Nevertheless I thought it might be cool to share some noteworthy “off topic” / real-life experiences every so often.
My Tour
Even though I’m definitely not a cycling pro, I still love to take my racer for a spin from time to time. And so it happened that I went on a tour around Lake Constance (aka. Bodensee) last weekend. The plan was to take two days for the approximately 200 km. After work, I put my bike into the car, drove 3 hours southeastwards and checked in to a beautiful and charming camp ground in Altnau, Switzerland in the early evening. I had dinner (Spaghetti á la Bolognese, which I brought along), read another hour and went to sleep. The upcoming days would be an exhausting one.
Day 1
Starting after breakfast at around 9 am, my goal was to reach Lindau, Germany by the end of the day, where I had booked a hostel for the night. I went clockwise around the lake, took a bunch of short breaks and went for lunch in Überlingen, Germany at around noon. By that time, I had completed around 65 km and about 60 km more to go. Halftime! I went on along the stunningly beautiful coast road, passing Meersburg, Friedrichshafen and another bunch of small villages. Along the route it had countless cute little cafés and beer gardens, each one more beautiful than the last. In the early evening, I checked in to the (very “rustic”) apartment, had a shower, went for dinner (super delicious pizza) and then went to bed early. I was considerably exhausted after the 125 km ride, but even more satisfied and happy.
Day 2
The second day I got up at 6 am and went to a nearby bakery for breakfast and two giant mugs of hot coffee. A perfect start to the day! Knowing that most of the distance was already behind me, I was confident to finish my tour before noon. I passed the Austrian border in Bregenz, shortly after crossed the border to Switzerland and went on along the scenic coastline northwestwards in the most beautiful sunshine. Shortly before noon I got back to my car again. What a ride! I felt proud of myself and relieved that everything went perfectly as planned. Since it was barely noon, I decided to take another quick stop in Radolfzell, Germany (which was the city I thought was cutest among all that I had passed on my tour) for another coffee, bought some cheese on the weekly market and eventually headed home.
Inspired by a friend who cycled from southern Italy all the way to Gibraltar, this was in fact my first tour of this kind and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to go for similar challenges in the future!
